The Thoracic / Respiratory Medicine/Pneumonology department of Democritus founded in 1987 (ΦΕΚ 215/8-12-87).
Professor Demosthenes Bouros, MD, PhD, FCCP was nominated as the head of the department in October, 2002, which soon relocated to the new University Hospital building (December, 2002). Currently, it is supported by 6 Consultants (4 University faculty members) and 7 Registrars. We offer a comprehensive inpatient (more than 1500 patients/year) and outpatient medical service for adults with all the conditions affecting the respiratory tract.
The department is a referral center for Interstitial Lung Disease and a Centre of Excellence for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and also offer advanced Interventional Pulmonology and Pleural Disease services, including Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy, therapeutic rigid Bronchoscopy and Medical Thoracoscopy.
The Pulmonary clinic is curing patients from Eastern Macedonia and Thrace on a daily basis, while patients from other parts of Greece and abroad are referred to our department.
We are committed to delivering excellent education, both in the pre-graduate and the post-graduate level (training of medical students in Pulmonology, Master diplomas: “Clinical Pharmacology and therapeutics”, and “sleep medicine”, yearly ERS training courses in Medical Thoracoscopy).
Regarding research, our university faculty members are Primary Investigators for several PhD programs and we have developed many co-operations with international research centers. Our main research focuses on pulmonary fibrosis, pleural diseases, lung cancer and sleep apnea both pathogenesis and treatment innovations.
Our work is published in international journals with high impact factors.
