The department of Pneumonology of the Democritus University of Thrace was established in 1987. Since October 2002, director of the department is Prof. D. Bouros, and in the new building of the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, the department has 4 academic members, 2 consultants and 7 residents. The residents are given full specialization after 5 years of clinical practice in the department.
The department is a referral center for the Interstitial Lung Diseases and a center of excellence in Pulmonary Fibrosis. There is also a special interest in interventional pulmonology with hands-on yearly seminars in medical thoracoscopy.
The department is covering the whole area of eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as is the only University department of Pneumonology in this area which is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Patients are referred from all parts of Greece, Cyprus and other countries.
In the department, students of the ,Medical School of the Democritus University of Thrace are educated. Also the department participates in the master diploma: "Clinical pharmacology and Therapeutics", directed by Prof .D. Bouros.
The academic staff of the department supervises a number of PhD's with important international collaborations. The research work of the department is both basic and translational being published in major international journals.
Collectively, the past five years, the Department of Pneumonology in the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, represents the most evolving department in the respiratory research field in Greece, as reflected by the overall number of publications that overcome 100, in high-impact factor journals (mean impact factor>5, H index=36, more than 3.000 citations), meaning more than 20 publications each year.
Moreover, our department is considered to be the reference center of excellence for interstitial lung diseases (including IPF), with international collaborations with research centers in the U.S.A (University Of Pittsburgh, Dorothy and Richard Simmons center, Professor Naftali Kaminski) and in Europe (Imperial College, Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital, London, UK, Professor of Pneumonology Athol Wells, University College of London, Professor Geoff Laurent) with merits of excellence and awards on a national and international level, with participations in large-scale clinical and research studies and with state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment (interstitial lung disease unit, apnea-hypopnea syndrome and interventional pneumonology). Professor Demosthenes Bouros participates as an expert in the development of international guidelines for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, idiopathic interstitial lung diseases and LAM.
